Happy new year. Welcome to 2008! Hmmm. What should I do to celebrate? I think I need a new theme. How do I celebrate? Gosh, I have no idea which way to go. How about women in music A to Z. That sounds like a good start to the year. So, how do I go with for A? How about Fiona Apple. As any long time reader of this blog can tell you, I've never been a big lover of albums, preferring the idea of bands releasing single after single and then compiling all the good ones later. But I did partake of a few albums in their entirety later and one of them that has gotten a lot of play is Fiona Apple's "Extraordinary Machine". It's an amazing album and to think that her record company, didn't want to realize it. It may not be anything like Tidal. You aren't gonna get Fiona sexing it up like on "The First Taste" or "Criminal" and there's no bold runaway hit like "Shadowboxer" or "Fast as you Can". But there is just great moving music. She takes risks and she has shown that she's no longer the young woman she was. She grew into her voice and found a new way to express herself. The chances she took should be appreciated. Instead the record company fought not to release the album, hoping to suck some hit singles out of her. In the end, Fiona's the winner because she has an album that she can be proud of.
