Rock Cliche #3 is song #3. A band puts out a new album. What is the third single gonna be? Well, let's look at some examples and see if you see a pattern?
Linkin Park's "Minutes to Midnight" album: Single 1- "What I've Done" Single 2- "Bleed it Out Single 3- "Shadow of the Day"
Evanescence's "Fallen" Single 1- "Bring Me To Life" Single 2- "Going Under" Single 3- "My Immortal"
Journey's "Escape" Single 1- "Who's Crying Now" Single 2- "Don't Stop Believing" Single 3- "Open Arms"
U2's "Achtung Baby" Single 1- "The Fly" Single 2- "Mysterious Ways" Single 3- "One"
See the pattern? You rock out the first two singles and then you bring the ballad. Aerosmith's "What It Takes", Guns & Roses' "Don't Cry" and Smashing Pumpkins' "Disarm" were all third singles. It's one of the reasons why I dislike albums so much. It's a very formulaic way of presenting the music to the masses. Rock it out twice and then slow it down.
An example of a band who went another route is Korn. Korn was very upset with their record company and the music business in general when they released "Take a Look in the Mirror". Single #1 was the rocking "Did My Time". Then came "Right Now". So what did they release for the third song? Did they slow it down?
