| Day 559 - De La Soul - Me Myself and I |
[May. 18th, 2008|07:21 pm] |
For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal, and Myspace for your convenience.
DAY 559 De La Soul - Me Myself and I From "3 Feet High and Rising"

De La Soul is my favorite hip hop group of all time. It's not even a contest. 'Me Myself and I' was my introduction to the group, and it was like nothing I had ever heard before. After hearing it on the radio and seeing the music video it didn't seem like a matter of 'wanting' the album, I felt like I NEEDED it. In this case I was probably right. Years later I still feel like it's one of the greatest albums that I have ever heard in ANY genre. Then they followed it up with 'De La Soul is Dead' which is probably just as good, if not BETTER, amazingly enough.
I heard 'Me Myself and I' long before I heard the song it sampled: Funkadelic's '(Not Just) Knee Deep'. My appreciation for Parliament, Funkadelic and George Clinton would come from recognizing the sources of the samples upon hearing them.
It's a shame that sampling became such an involved and expensive practice. I don't know that I would have been nearly as interested in older music as I am if it hadn't been for albums like this.

DAY 558 MC Lyte - Cha Cha Cha From "Eyes on This"

When I felt like listening to some good old school hip hop on the way to work a couple of days ago, 'Eyes on This' was the cassette that I grabbed. I rocked out to 'Cha Cha Cha' as I drove, and all was right with the world.
MC Lyte was one of the first female rappers I ever heard that sounded like she could hold her own with the best of them.

DAY 557 Simon and Garfunkel - Keep the Customer Satisfied From "Bridge Over Troubled Water"

Am I the only one on Earth that didn't know about Costco's credit card policy!? You know, the policy where they DON'T TAKE THEM unless they're American Express? Are they just trying to make up for all of the other businesses that DON'T take it?!
I was sent to grab a cake, and I didn't have any other form of payment. That left me driving across town to the closest bank to get cash, and then driving back. IRRITATING!
Eventually I did get my items, and there was a very reasonably priced Simon and Garfunkel box set among them. I had to laugh as I listened to this song on the drive home, whem you consider how unsatisfied of a customer I had been mere moments earlier. I also hadn't heard it in ages, and I was loving it.

Brian Flannagan - A surprisingly gentle, folky sound from this former producer and drummer. MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/brianflanagan

| Day 556 - Gucci Crew II - Get 'Em Girls |
[May. 15th, 2008|10:40 pm] |
For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal, and Myspace for your convenience.
DAY 556 Gucci Crew II - Get 'Em Girls From "So Def, So Fresh, So Stupid"

There were at least three choices that I wanted to pick today, but I've got to go with this one for reasons that will be explained later in this blog entry.
I was in the mood for some old school hip hop today, so I grabbed an MC Lyte tape. I enjoyed listening to it, and it left me wanting to hear this album too.
The Gucci Crew II were a three man group made up of rappers MC V and TFS, along with their DJ, Disco Rick. 'Sally That Girl' was the single that was on the radio all of the time. I originally bought a cassette of 'So Def, So Fresh, So Stupid' as a birthday gift for my friend, Jason. It's the first time I remember putting a box inside a box inside a box inside a box, etc. The cassette was the payoff at the core of it all. We both LOVED the album, and I picked up my own copy of the tape years later.
I remember 'Get 'Em Girls' as one of the tracks that Jason and I really tried to memorize. We would try to get through the first verse together without taking a breath. It was ridiculously difficult to do.
I discovered sad news while doing research for this entry. According to Wikipedia: MC V was shot 6 times in the back and killed in Americus, Georgia in December of 2007. He was buried in Ocala, Florida.
Rest in peace, MC V.

| There's an Arcati Crisis on My Lawn! |
[May. 14th, 2008|07:03 pm] |
Lyndzapalooza has been posting interviews with our artists all week on the LP MySpace page. Today's is an epic-length Q&A with Arcati Crisis.
--
If you are free on Saturday between 2 p.m. and 11 p.m. I hope you'll be at There's a Stage on My Lawn! in Yardley, PA, presented by Lyndzapalooza. And, if you can't come I encourage you to to pass the word along to another music lover in your life.
I know you've already been hit (bombarded, even) with invites and bulletins about the event, but I want to give you my personal pitch for this year's festival, because it's something truly unique.
There’s a Stage on My Lawn features fourteen amazing, independent, local artists. They’ve all been busting their asses for the past year to rock better and harder than ever before ... evolving from coffee shops to open mics to underbills to featured shows.
Enter the Rooms, Bevin Caulfield, Just Like Me, Irene Molloy, Jesse Schurr – if you listen to XPN or frequent venues like The Khyber, The Grape Street, The Tin Angel, and Milkboy Coffee chances are that you’ve heard their names or their music before.
Each of those five acts – as well as the other nine - are on the verge of becoming something way more awesome than they are today, and we've collected them all onto a single lawn.
I’m honestly a fan of all fourteen of our artists, and I’m still not sure how we got so lucky as to gather them all in one place, but I promise you that the opportunity to see them all together is fleeting. And, it’s certainly not going to happen again for just $12.
Also, there's Lyndzapalooza itself. Did you know that we're a lot more than a once-a-year party? We threw a Winter Mixer at the Shubin Theatre, where we later volunteered to renovate. We invaded or hosted several open mics this spring. We're raising money so that we can incorporate as a non-profit. Next year we hope to have our festival on a farm.
I am as proud as I can possibly be to be an organizer of and an artist in this amazing event. It's going to be good, and it's going to be fun, and I wish every local music fan could be a part of it.
I hope that I'll see you and/or some of your most rocking friends on the lawn. Head to TicketLeap for more info & pre-sale or reserved tickets. |

| Day 555 - State Shirt - Straw Man |
[May. 14th, 2008|12:03 am] |
For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal, and Myspace for your convenience.
DAY 555 State Shirt - Straw Man From "Don't Die"

State Shirt made today's choice very easy for me. All I had to do was read about the new video for 'Straw Man' and it was set.
As it says on stateshirt.com, State Shirt isn’t really State Shirt’s name. It’s something other than State Shirt. But he does wear a lot of State Shirts. So, for the sake of this blog entry I am going to refer to State Shirt as the name of the 'band' and the name of the man too. (I say 'band' because State Shirt the man IS the band!)
State Shirt is a songfighter like myself, although he discovered the site long before I did. I am of the opinion that 'Straw Man' is one of the greatest songs you will find in the archives at Songfight.org
It's safe to say that State Shirt (the man) loves dogs. I don't believe the promotion is going on any more, but for a good chunk of time you could have gotten a free copy of "Don't Die" by donating $10 to the Brittany Foundation dog rescue. You could argue that State Shirt (the band) loves dogs too. A loop of his dog Edison is featured in 'Straw Man', and it adds a lot to the song.
I had to check to see if I had already picked this. Amazingly, this is my first State Shirt selection, but it will not be the last.

DAY 554 Liz Phair - Whip-Smart From "Whip-Smart"

My head felt stuffy on the drive home from work today, so I decided to take a nap after lying down and watching a few episodes of the Twilight Zone. I fell asleep for a few hours and upon waking up I realized I hadn't picked a song yet.
I came up with a couple of other choices before thinking of "Whip-Smart", but this was the song that I was especially eager to listen to. I rushed over to YouTube, I found the video and it became my pick for today. It's a great song.

To keep this brief: 'Galapogos' is one of the prettiest songs I have heard from the Smashing Pumpkins, or from anyone else for that matter.

16 minutes until the midnight deadline and I'm feeling sick with a nasty sore throat right now, so I will make this brief.
I have been listening to this album a lot recently, and it is solid from start to finish. This is one of my favorite tracks at the moment. The ending took me by surprise the first time I heard it.
